Meniac : Ciao Catherine da Meniac e dai suoi lettori. Parlaci di te. Chi è Catherine Tessier ?
Catherine : Ciao!

Ci è piaciuto fantasticare a riguardo.

ENGLISH

Meniac! : Hello Catherine, from Meniac! and its readers. Tell us about yourself. Who is Catherine Tessier?
Catherine : Hi! It’s a pleasure to be here today with you. I’m a 25 years old French Canadian from Quebec City. Being a huge board game lover since many years, I’ve also always been passionate about other cultures, beliefs and mythologies, I became quickly interested in ancient practices such as yoga, Reiki and meditation. I’ve been traveling around Asia and Europe since a few years, fulfilling my desires of cultural discoveries while working on my board game dream-project.

Catherine Tessier interview wardens game 10Meniac! : How your passion for boardgames was born?
Catherine : I started playing board games in my childhood with my family, growing up, the hobby left place to a passion. When I met Sam, my partner, we spent most of our time playing games and growing our collection until we decided to turn our passion into a profession.

Meniac! : You and Raven Tales, a company of which you are director, work on your first title : Wardens. How was the idea that gave birth to this game?
Catherine : We’ve been playing many games during many years before even thinking about creating our own game. Every time we played, we noticed our favorite game mechanisms, themes and strategies. Like many others, we started talking ‘just for fun’ about how our own game would be. We loved daydreaming about it. Soon, we knew exactly what would be the theme, story and main mechanisms of our game, if we ever created one. This was never serious talking until the day Sam took the decision to leave his career as a concept artist in order to fulfill his creative dream. I jumped in without hesitation!

Meniac! : We know that you are often around the world and that travel is part of your creative process. How much of these trips will we find in Wardens?
Catherine : During the writing of Warden’s storybook, I was inspired by ancient mythologies such as Mu continent and the Naacal civilization which are mentioned a lot in the Story and take a big place in the universe of Wardens. We also mention different cultures in the characters back stories.
We started traveling mainly during the playtesting stage of Wardens which allowed us to attend in multiple board game events in many different countries and most of all, to meet many different gamers who were interested in playtesting the game. This allowed us to get a lot of different feedbacks, comments and suggestions. In less than a year, we were able to improve the game a lot.

Meniac! : Wardens will propose a gameplay in a post-apocalyptic world where the horrors and madness of the H.P. Lovecraft universe reside. Why did you choose to include the beings of the writer of Providence and in particular the great ancient par excellence?
Catherine : We are both long-time lovecraftian fans, the mythology of the Great Old Ones is quite complex and fascinating. As we wanted our game to be a mythological immersive adventure, we had an immense pleasure to mix men’s ancient beliefs with Lovecraft’s cosmic tales and create this new universe.
As we were inspired by the lost continent of Mu and its ancient civilization, Cthulhu was definitely the perfect antagonist as Lovecraft mentions Mu, where the stone-city of R’lyeh is submerged.

Catherine Tessier interview wardens gameMeniac! : Wardens will propose four game modes, One-vs-All and One-vs-One where Cthulhu fight against the Warden’s team and a co-op and solo mode where the Wardens fight against the game in which Cthulhu is automated. Which mode do you prefer and why?
Catherine : My favorite mode is One-vs-All where one player take the over-powered role of Cthulhu and his Starspawns and fight against the Warden’s team. I love this mode because all the characters have their own characteristics and abilities, giving each player a totally different gameplay which adds a lot of replay-value to the game.
I love to see the Warden’s work cooperatively against Cthulhu, especially during the battles which are dice-less and use strategic battle-tokens which makes every fight really dynamic and intense!
They absolutely need to work together if they want to succeed. It’s really fun to see them struggle because Cthulhu is way stronger than them and cannot be killed. The Wardens will need to help each other out otherwise one of them will quickly get Cthulhu’s madness and become insane. Once a Warden is insane, he is corrupted by Cthulhu and play for him against the others which turns the tide and totally changes the team’s strategy.

Meniac! : Wardens vaguely reminds us of the game model proposed by Eldritch Horror. Is there some sort of inspiration or is it just our appearance?
Catherine : I really enjoy all Fantasy Flight Games and especially Eldritch and Arkham Horror with their Lovecraft theme. Warden’s gameplay is quite really different though. In Wardens, one player will take the role of Cthulhu and his Starspawns, this player will have his own gameplay with his own over-powered abilities and strategies. What stands out the most about Wardens is that once a warden reaches his madness point limit, he becomes insane and plays for Cthulhu, against the other wardens, until the end of the game.
The map and universe is totally unique, the story also brings lots of depth and immersion to the game. Here, as Cthulhu cannot be killed by simple humans, the Wardens must find artifacts in order to bring the Ancient Gods back to life, only them will be able to stop the Great Old One.
The mechanics are also really different, there will be mind-reading, ability cards and strategic troop moves mechanics which brings a lot less randomness and luck to the game. The player’s actions are also different as the Wardens must fight against Cthulhu and his Starspawns in strategic and chaotic battles while traveling the world in search of the powerful artifacts.

Catherine Tessier interview wardens gameMeniac! : We have read that you are working on changes in appearance and gesture of miniatures. How perfectionists are you? Is the “state of definitive art” ever reached?
Catherine : I am lucky that my partner and co-designer is also a talented artist, that way we know that Warden’s artwork really matches our vision. On the other hand, having an artist in the team makes us really perfectionist especially about the appearance of the game and the components.
I also try to have the community involved into the creating process as much as I can, all the comments and suggestions that we receive are always considered seriously. Wardens is made for the gamers and we want them to enjoy it as most as possible. This is why we changed the miniatures three times already and improved most of the artwork many times. We are not in a hurry and we want the game to be extremely well polished before we release it.

Meniac! : In Wardens the evolution of the game will be guided by the actions of the players and their choices or by a component of random progression such as card-driven events?
Catherine : As I am really not a lucky person and I don’t personally enjoy chance-based games, I wanted Wardens to have as less randomness as possible. The whole gameplay, the multiple character’s actions and the battles are strategic and are guided by the player’s choice. There is still some randomness such as card-driven abilities and a few dice rolls which gives more replay-value to the game and will determine, for example, the number of components found or how many guesses a player will get to read Cthulhu’s mind.
Obviously, in the coop and solo mode, there is some random mechanisms as Cthulhu is automated by cards and some dice rolls.

Meniac! : What would be your greatest satisfaction from Wardens?
Catherine : Our biggest dream was to actually create our own board game, with our favorite mechanics and strategies and our idea of this new and immersive mythic, post-apocalyptic universe. A game which we enjoy and never get tired of playing. Now that I fulfilled this creating dream and have this prototype game which is my own, my greatest satisfaction is to watch others play it. There is nothing more gratifying than seeing other people enjoying the game, their laughs are my biggest prize.
Obviously, our next goal is to fund on Kickstarter and be able to produce the game. Wardens is originally a trilogy so it would be amazing to be able to make it to the second one.

Catherine Tessier interview wardens game 12Meniac! : Soon we will see the Wardens Kickstarter active. How important is it for a young designer / publisher to use a crowdfunding platform today?
Catherine : Crowdfunding really help new designers such as myself to slowly get introduced to the community and be able to release a first project.
Kickstarter is the best platform for an independent creator who does not have access to traditional advertising and selling platforms which big companies use. It allows us to engage with the community for minimal fees and be in a direct and privileged relationship with the backers.

Meniac! : Why would it be good and right to be a Wardens backer?
Catherine : The backers are the only ones who can help us send Wardens to a manufacturer and produce the game, making this dream come true.
There is going to be some Kickstarter exclusives which only the backers will be able to get.
We are also going to add a lot of stretch goals which will improve the game a lot with better quality components, additional characters and bigger sized miniatures.

Meniac! : One last thing: Do you promise that you will close all the portals you will find during your travels?
Catherine : I closed all the ones I saw in India and in Malaysia, killed a few Starspawns which were standing on my way and I’m soon leaving to Europe, hoping to find many Artifacts and finally be able to repel the cosmic entity!

  • Federico Trippini
